Trouble-free Practice

It's not difficult to experience the joy of trouble-free computing. All you need to do is to follow a few steps to maintain your computer performance.

Update your anti-virus, personal firewall and Windows software regularly.
Keeping your computer protected and updated will protect you against internet threats.

Don't force your computer to speed up
When a computer is busy opening a program or a file, don't try to do something else. Let the computer do whatever it needs to be done. If you try to do something else, such as to open another program at the same time or any other way to force your computer to speed up, it may crash.

Close any open window before shutting down your computer
Helps your computer to help you by closing down some of the programs and open windows before shutting down your computer. You may also wish to wait until your hard disk stops being busy.

Backup your personal files regularly
Practice makes perfect - backup your personal files regularly.

Don't mess around in your Windows system folders
The Windows folder and its subdirectories are the dangerous area that you should keep away from. By moving or deleting anything inside the Windows system folders could stop Windows working properly. The exceptions are the temporary folder, temporary internet folder and cookies folder.

Don't touch your Windows Registry
The Windows Registry is the core of Windows. Windows reads the Registry constantly. If you really need to get into Windows Registry and add, delete or change anything, always backup your Registry before doing anything.

Always shut down your computer properly before switching it off
You should always shut down your computer properly by going to Start - shutdown, or for NT systems Ctrl-Alt-Del and then shutdown. Never switch off your computer without shutting it down. If your computer crashes (freezes) or a blue screen (called Blue Screen of Death), press Ctrl-Alt-Del and close down the frozen program. If it doesn't work, then switch off your computer manually. When your computer is restarted, use ScanDisk or any equivalent program to scan your system for errors.

Keep an eye on your available disk space and RAM levels
When your RAM is used up, the computer will convert your disk space into virtual memory. You will need to keep an eye on your disk space to ensure you have enough to run your programs. Add some more RAMs if possible. If you play computer games, you will also need to check your graphic card memory.

Restart your computer to free up some RAM
When you have finished a program which requires a large amount of RAM, such as high graphics computer games, restart your computer before doing something else, as it will free up some RAM.

Some tricks

If you need to send large attachments or pictures (up to 1 Gb) and your recipient has a dial-up or his email server won't allow attachments over a certain size, try www.yousendit.com . Upload your file and they will temporarily host the file and send an email to the recipient giving them a url address to pick it up at.
