What is a search engine?

Search engines help you find information on the Internet. You must enter a word, or words, that you expect will be in the Web pages you are looking for. The search engine will then look through its index of documents for Web pages containing the keyword.

Spiders

Computer robot programs, referred to sometimes as "crawlers", "knowledge-bots", and "knowbots". They are used by search engines to roam the World Wide Web via the Internet, visit sites and databases, and keep the search engine database of web pages up to date. They obtain new pages, update known pages, and delete obsolete ones.

Human-Powered Directories

A human-powered directory, such as the Open Directory , depends on humans for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted.

Changing your web pages has no effect on your listing. Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a directory.
