As a precaution, before proceeding to use any Tips, Programs, or making any changes, from any links contained therein and before opening any Hidden Windows System Settings, it is advisable to perform a full backup of the system even though Windows XP comes with a life-saving 'SYSTEM RESTORE' feature.  Always remember to create a System Restore Point before making any changes to your PC. Once that's done it should be safe to proceed with any tweaking you wish, but you do so entirely at your own risk.

Windows did not start successfully.

A recent hardware or software change migt have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files anre folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset bytton was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

The probelmis, the keyboard always freezes at the point and then the boot fails.

Q: The computer freezes up all the time. I tried everything?
A: Before removing any drivers or else any device just boot the machine in safe mode as in safe mode no drivers get loaded if it does not hang in safe mode then its some thing wrong with the drivers try removing it one by one , remove all PCI cards. Re-boot and see if there is still a problem. If not, then replace one card, re-boot and install it's drivers. Re-boot and check for the problem again. Do this with each PCI card. also try changing the hard disk it could also be a problem "hardware related problem".

Q:
I am having a problem with my computer, can you help me?
A: I will help as much as I can. The major problem is that every system is different and the number of causes of system failure are numerous.
(1) The first thing you should do is ensure you have the latest drivers installed for your equipment. Drivers are such a common cause of problems that there is no need to troubleshoot any further until that step is complete.
(2) Second, contact your PC maker/software vendor for technical support.
The final thing you should understand is that I am not sitting in front of your system. Troubleshooting from a remote location, let alone by E-Mail, is difficult if not impossible to accomplish. I will help as much as I can. Q: Every time I cold boot my computer, I receive a blue screen: STOP:0x00000050 Page_Fault_In_Non-Paged_Area. This requires me to power down and on again. Upon this second boot attempt, I choose either "Start Windows normally" or "Start from last Windows configuration that worked" and EVERY TIME Windows starts and works perfectly. I must, however, repeat this procedure the next time I log on after a cold boot.

XP Home boot-up problem.

Q: I've aquired a new problem in xp home... occasionally when starting from a cold boot, the computer will go to the safe mode boot menu while highlighted in the "last good configuration" spot. Thing is that if I try to arrow up or down to pick safe mode or another selection I can't... or it does but it takes like a minute or two to get to the selection I picked. Like really sloooooow keyboard thing. Getting into the bios is equally as misserable if possible at all. hit or miss thing. If I dont touch it at all it will continue past the safe mode screen and boot into xp most of the time. I recently upgraded my mouse to an optical usb one to relace the trackball usb mouse that came with my ibm netvista. The drivers are crap and I removed them and let windows do its plug and play thing. it works but most of the time I have to reach in the back of my computer upon getting to the logon screen after booting and disconnect and reconnect the mouse into the usb port to get it to work. The serial port for the mouse does not work at all and Im guessing that setting is in the bios..which I cant get to becuse of the keyboad problem at boot. I did an online virus scan and it came back clean.
A: pop the xp cd in and run sfc /scannow
don't miss the space after the c with the mouse go into the device manager and delete the usb then click on icon at the top for scan for hardware changes.

Q: Why can't I use msconfig to change my services?
A: The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console (services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is disabling the service. The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no reason exists to justify disabling "everything." Not "allowing" people to use msconfig reduces the flames and technical support questions in my inbox from people that fail to read the descriptions I offer with each service and the warnings I attach to them.

Q:
Does Windows XP supports multiple processors?
A: Windows XP Home Edition does not. The Professional version supports a maximum of two processors.

Q:
Did Windows XP delete all my documents?
A: Probably not. Try looking in C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\My Documents where %USERNAME% is your login name.

Q: Is there a "Personal Web Server" type of software included in Windows XP?
A: XP Professional has IIS 5.1, although you need to install it separately. XP Home Edition does not include any type of "Personal Web Server".

Q: Why is Defrag Important?
A: With the use of your files and programs over time, they tend to move location on your hard disk. Sometimes the individual clusters that make up a single file can become separated (fragmented). With increased fragmentation comes weaker performance of your computer, because it takes longer for your processor to access a single file. The longer and harder your processor must work the shorter the life of your computer.

The Defrag utility corrects the problem of separated file fragments, by placing all of the data clusters that belong together next to each other.
